What do you need to install an EV charger?

If you’ve recently bought an electric vehicle, you might be planning to install an EV charger. Charging your vehicle at home is far more convenient and cost-effective when compared to using public charging stations.

While you don’t need planning permission to install an EV charger at home, there are some things you need to think about first.

Homeowner’s Permission

Are you the homeowner? If not, you’ll need the homeowner or Landlord’s permission to install an EV charger. Prepare to have this in writing for any contractors you hire – they may not be able to complete the job without it.

A Designated Parking Space

One of the most important requirements for installing an EV Charger at home is having an off-road, designated parking space. A private driveway, carport or garage is ideal.

The designated parking space will also need access to a decent power supply that’s sufficient to power the EV charger.

As well as being off-road and private, we recommend that all our clients ensure their parking and charging space is accessible. This means it doesn’t block other driveways, walkways, or access to other buildings.

An Approved Electrician

EV chargers should only be installed by an approved, qualified electrician.  Working with an electrician guarantees the safety of the installation, ensuring it meets with all health and safety regulations and requirements.

When you work with V-Lectric we’ll manage the entire process from start to finish. We’ll help you choose the right spot for the charger by conducting a survey of the site beforehand.

Then, as we’re fitting the charger we’ll also route the cable to keep everything neat and tidy. Finally, once installed we’ll test the charger to make sure it’s safe and that everything works as it should.

After every charger installation we do, the client is provided with a NICEIC certification too.

Wi-Fi Connection

Most EV Chargers need access to the internet to share data and information about your electric vehicle. Therefore, your charger should be placed within reach of a stable wi-fi connection. If your wi-fi coverage is patchy, you might need to look at getting an extender or asking your provider if they can offer you a better connection.

If you don’t have a wi-fi connection, you can look for chargers with inbuilt 4G sim cards instead.
